Natural Killer Cell Expansion and Scale-Up in Vertical-Wheel Bioreactors

Introduction

Natural Killer (NK) cells are a type of lymphocyte in the immune system that can target and destroy tumor cells and pathogens without prior sensitization. Allogeneic natural killer cell therapy holds significant promise in the field of immunotherapy, particularly for cancer treatment, however, traditional expansion platforms lack the adequate range of scale required to move rapidly from early process development through commercial- scale manufacturing. Scale-out models, which are often used for autologous therapy, increase batch-to-batch variability, reduce cost-effectiveness, and complexity to process validations that ultimately delay progress and impede cell therapies from reaching patients.
