Mixing Mechanism Vertical impeller that generates a gentle, large-scale, upward-and-outward flow. Horizontal impeller that creates high-shear zones and turbulent eddies.
Shear Stress Very low. Designed to minimize hydrodynamic stress, making it ideal for shear-sensitive cells like stem cells and cell aggregates. High, especially near the impeller blades. Can be detrimental to fragile cells, although impeller designs have been optimized to reduce this.
Scalability Linear. The hydrodynamic conditions remain consistent as the volume increases, allowing for predictable scale-up. Complex. Scaling up requires careful optimization to maintain consistent conditions, as fluid dynamics change with volume.
Homogeneity Excellent. The vertical wheel creates a highly uniform environment with eliminating occurrences of high turbulence. Good. Requires careful design to ensure uniform mixing and prevent gradients, especially in large vessels.
