Potential Applications

Bioprocesses have become quite varied in terms of cell lines and cell culturing modes that are used.  PBS Vertical-Wheel™ bioreactors are uniquely suited for a multitude of different cell culture applications in a variety of bioprocessing fields:

  • Cell Therapies
  • Therapeutic Proteins
  • Vaccines

Vertical-Wheel™ bioreactors are available in 2 different drive mechanisms, the MagDrive and the AirDrive, and each provides an advantage in certain applications.

  • The MagDrive, which is driven by magnetic coupling, allows agitation at low working volumes (5:1 turn-down ratio).  Furthermore, since there is no requirement for sparger gas usage under standard conditions, the need for antifoaming agents is also eliminated.  Therefore, the MagDrive is generally suited for Cell Therapies application and certain Vaccines application involving microcarriers.

  • The AirDrive, which is driven by buoyant force of the sparged gases, offers high mass transfer rates that result in improved oxygenation and CO2 stripping.  This drive system is generally suited for Therapeutic Proteins application and certain Vaccines application involving single-cell suspensions.

PBS Biotech will work with clients to help select the right bioreactor design to meet their needs, as well as help design a custom solution to accommodate any special client requirements.
